Indicator: Weather – Sunshine

Figure 1 indicates the trends in mean daily sunshine for 2003–07. This period has been considerably sunnier than normal with 2006 setting a new record for sunshine over the whole year. Again on a monthly basis, sunshine has been above the mean for most months, with significant increases during spring–autumn.

Long-term trend

Figure 2 shows changes in mean daily sunshine over the longer term. Annual sunshine has increased over 2003–07, which is not surprising given that maximum temperatures also increased over this period.
