Home to much of Australia's high country, Kosciuszko National Park, the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme, wide open grazing lands and a thriving ski and eco-tourism insustry, Snowy River Shire is unique within the Australian Capital Region. The Shire is about 602,970 hectares in size of which about one third contains the rugged snow capped mountain ranges and slopes of Kosciuszko National Park. The National Park and snowy mountains are a major tourist drawcard and focus for regional centres of Jindabyne, Berridale and Adaminaby. While three-quarters of the terrain outside the National Park is grassland or cleared land traditionally used for grazing, this rural contribution is not as obvious in today's tourist oriented economy. As of June 2004, some 7322 people lived in Snowy River Shire. Read more > |
