Best known for its fine wool production, clean air and sparkling mountain waters, Upper Lachlan Council Area straddles the Great Dividing Range in the Southern Highlands of NSW. Situated in the headwaters of the Lachlan and Hawkesbury-Nepean Rivers, most of the council area's 708,886 hectares are undulating to hilly with an average elevation of 762 metres above sea level. The eastern part of the council area features rugged dissected plateaus at the edge of the Blue Mountains.

Upper Lachlan Council Area was formed in 2004 when the former Crookwell Shire was amalgamated with the northern half of Mulwaree Shire and most of Gunning Shire.

The council area boasts prime lamb, beef and agricultural production as a dominant land use and industry. Crookwell is the main service centre for the council area and, with a population of about 4400, accounting for close to half of the 7621 people living in the council area in June 2004. Read more >
