Young Shire

  • 2004 State of the Environment Report (External Link)
  • 2000 State of the Environment Report for Young Shire is available on CD

Located on the edge of the wheat-sheep belt in the South Western Slopes region of NSW, Young Shire has litttle native vegetation left because of clearing for agricultural production.

Renowned for its cherries and the annual Cherry Festival, Young Shire boasts a thriving horticultural industry.

Within its 269,370 hectares, the shire sustains a rich diversity of agriculture including cereal and oilseed cropping, and sheep and cattle production.

As a result of its extensive agriculture, the shire has a very small proportion of land dedicated to national parks and state forests, and biodiversity is not as rich as other shires in the region. Read more >
